Reforestation Project in El Salvador and Hurricane Felix
September 12, 2007
Despite the fact that hurricanes bring
destruction and horror, the expected damages were not as high as was
forecasted. Unfortunately, any impact in countries such as Nicaragua and
Honduras could make a huge difference in terms of human life and
infrastructure damage. Scarce resources and lack of preparation to deal
with natural disasters in these areas increase the odds of a catastrophe
as well.
Coffee is one of the main sources of income in these countries. Fortunately, based on information from sources like Reuters Alert Net, Central American coffee crops escaped from been hit with Hurricane Felix; instead it hit Nicaragua and then moved over Honduras as a tropical storm.
Coffee institutions such as The Honduran Coffee Institute, or IHCAFE, Association of Coffee Producers of Matagalpa, and Anacafe have informed me that damages have not been severe in the coffee regions.
Mr. Dave Deppner from Trees For the Future alerted us about the delays of our reforestation project in El Salvador due to this natural phenomenon. We hope to resume the project soon.
