An Update on our project in El Savador

December 17, 2007

I am happy to announce that last week we moved forward with our reforestation project in El Salvador. I received an email from Maria Isabel Gutierrez, who works for the coordinator of this reforestation project, Ucraprobex coffee coop. She updated me and said a package with 14600 seeds of 5 different varietals as well as hard copy manuals safely reached the Ucraprobex headquarter office in El Salvador. Ms. Gutierrez expressed her happiness that this project would soon get off the ground.

We set up an initial plan to target seven different regions for planting, mostly located in the West, Central and East site of El Salvador. The departments / political divisions that will be positively be affected by this project are:

  • Sonsonate department
  • Ahuachapan deparment
  • Santa Ana department
  • La Libertad department
  • San Salvador department
  • Usulutan department
  • San Miguel department

We expect to engage up to 1200 coffee growers during this process. The next step is to prepare the nurseries where the seeds will be planted and grow for the next three months.
Portland Roasting is excited and committed to this project because we believe in offsetting our carbon impact and ensuring that El Salvador has healthy forests for generations to come.

More updates will come soon.
