Stories From the La Hilda Students: Celebrating Independence Day
October 03, 2008
During
Independence Day in Costa Rica we celebrate with a torch crossing the
whole country, and students gather at the town’s main square to
receive it and pass it to the next town, they bring the school bands and
candle lanterns, as the history tells it on the original day. Ivan, from La Hilda School, would like to add his impressions. Last September 15th we celebrated the Costa Rican independence day with many activities. One of them was to carry the torch. We had a very nice experience and proudly enjoy this moment. In addition, we took advantage of this moment to shot some nice pictures of all students and teachers that I would like to share.
From Marylyn and Sobeyda
¡Hola!
We hope you are doing fine and your friends as well. Our names
are Marilyn and Sobeyda. We want to tell you about our experience with the
independence torch. We use a truck wagon that took us up to the main square
of Poas. We wait all morning until the torch was brought close to us. In
the afternoon, we participated in several events such as the candle
lantern parade, local fire works and band parade. The typical food was
provided by local inhabitants of this region so it was nice to find unique
offers of food such as “cimarrones”. Finally, we were so happy
to participate in all these events of the independence month of Costa
Rica. From Victor and Lorenzo
Hello, we are Victor and my friend Lorenzo. We are glad to have a wonderful computer lab teacher that helps us a lot. On Sunday, September 15th we went to carry the torch at the main square of Poas. We were happy to watch a group of young people which perform typical dances representing the national folklore and local customs.
We are really happy with the curriculum activities within our School. For
instance, the celebration of the child day was funny until a friend broke a
window, unfortunately, he was the only one punished. Teachers did not
allowed him to participate in the torch event. The solution for our
friend was to ride his bicycle just behind the wagon until he reached main
square Poas as well. This day at night, we participated in an additional meeting where typical food was served such as cimarrona.
On the other hand, we are so happy because we could access our email accounts, so we hope to be more in contact in order to inform all of you about our activities.
