LINKING COFFEE AND COMMUNITY
Portland Roasting navigates the coffee-growing
regions of the world with an eye firmly fixed on quality and an ear tuned
to the needs of the farmer. We are motivated by a belief that everyone
will win if they are given and receive their fair share. Our Farm
Friendly Direct™ program mirrors our company philosophy --
integrity in action.
In 1998, we developed our first
Farm Friendly Direct™ program in Guatemala. Our
unique coffee sourcing program creates a direct link with our growers,
and, in the process, promotes a cooperative relationship that yields
high-quality coffee. We pay above-market prices for the coffee, and this
additional premium finances farm and community assistance projects such as
tree planting, construction of water treatment facilities and water pumps,
community centers, and schools -- among others.
The goals of Farm Friendly
Direct™ are two-fold -- acquiring quality coffee while
adding to the lives of farmers and their communities. Our vested interest
in our growers, and their farming methods, secures a healthy future for
the farmers' land and livelihood while producing memorable coffee.
Fluid and organic, much like the coffee
industry, our Farm Friendly Direct™ program flexes
and stretches according to farm and community needs as well as fluctuating
coffee crops. Some of our projects are one-time contributions while others
are ongoing initiatives.
