Shea Hagan,

Barista Trainer

shea@portlandroasting.com

A Denver, Colorado, transplant, Shea got his first job as a barista at the tender age of 17 at Coffee People. For the past 10 years, he has worked behind the counters of countless cafés as both barista and café manager.

He was drawn to London, England, in 2002, by a desire to study modern music. For one year he delved into the world of drums, music theory and recording at Drumtech where he came away with a diploma. While overseas, he worked at Illy Coffee gaining experience in quality control and as a barista trainer.

As Portland Roasting Company’s full-time barista trainer, he offers on- and off-site classes on the basics of brewing espresso from whole bean to final, frothy drink. His recent certification as a USBC (United States Barista Competition) Judge adds to his expansive expertise. His mechanical knowledge of espresso machines, grinders and brewers makes him indispensable to the Portland Roasting team.

When not training others on the finer points of espresso, he can be found drinking coffee, playing music or snowboarding.

Gail Buchanan,

Equipment Manager

gail@portlandroasting.com

Gail has spent the last 15 years taking things apart and putting them back together again. As a freelance audio engineer and electrician in both New York and Portland, she’s serviced and refurbished vintage synthesizers, gutted and rewired entire recording studios, assembled custom guitar pedals and recording gear and helped to build and program theatrical automation for Broadway shows.

Gail came to Portland Roasting looking for something new and she found it in the Production Department where she quickly advanced to Production Supervisor. Now, Gail will take her Ms. Fix-it qualities and apply them to her new position as equipment manager where she will service, repair and install coffee and espresso brewing machines.

Once an herbal tea drinker, Gail has succumbed to the joys of coffee – especially the Americano. Trieste Organic ranks as her top espresso and Dark Sumatran is her choice for drip coffee. When not tinkering with spare parts, Gail can be found tinkering with a crossword puzzle, buying cookbooks and playing chess.
